Orthodontic Emergencies: What to Do & When to Call
Most orthodontic issues are minor and can wait until your next appointment.
However, some situations need immediate attention to protect your teeth, gums, and overall health.
If you feel that either you or your child is experiencing an emergency, please don’t hesitate to call our office at 248-644-5400.
Call Our Office Immediately If You Have:
- Severe pain that does not improve with pain relievers
- Injury or trauma to the mouth or face involving braces or appliances
- Swelling of the gums, face, or jaw, especially with pain or fever
- Bleeding that won’t stop
- A broken wire or appliance that is stuck in your gums, cheek, tongue, or lips
- Signs of infection, such as pus, fever, or increasing swelling
- A swallowed or inhaled orthodontic piece
- If breathing is affected, call 911 immediately
Call Us Soon (Same Day or Next Business Day) If:
- A wire is poking and cannot be covered with orthodontic wax
- A loose band or bracket could be swallowed
- A broken appliance is preventing you from eating or speaking comfortably
- A retainer or aligner is lost or broken, especially right after braces are removed
Usually Not an Emergency:
- Mild soreness after an adjustment
- A bracket that is loose but still attached to the wire
- Minor irritation that improves with wax
- Lost elastic bands
What You Can Do at Home (Temporary Relief):
- Use orthodontic wax on poking wires or brackets
- Rinse with warm salt water for irritation
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed
- Avoid hard or sticky foods until we can see you
